Bio

Neo-soul songstress with bite, Janelle Monique is armed with a new catalogue of songs, preparing for the release of her sophomore album. An award-winning vocalist, Janelle studied jazz performance and arranging at Toronto’s renowned Humber College Jazz Program as a vocal major – four years Janelle dubs as an enriching experience that enabled her to grow immensely as a musician. Music has always been a part of her life, since her beginnings in classical piano from the age of 7 and in the studio as a session singer from the age of 15. In pursuit of her musical aspirations she has spent the past four years living out of a suitcase, traveling the world performing as an artist and band-leader. If by nothing else, she is marked by her tenacity and passion for the art form. Singing in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French Creole, she exploited her versatility with her 2008 debut You Go To My Head (ZaFéMuzik), on which she also co-arranged and co-produced. She is certainly exploring new avenues this second time around, releasing the ideas and emotions that have been building up inside over her tumultuous and adventurous past two years. Having roots in soul, jazz, Latin and house music, Janelle Monique’s new music promises to be an unexpected yet refreshing surge of contemporary R&B, with themes and experimentations representing this next phase in her life. Indulge in the musical mélange…
